A Follow-up Study of the Dissociative Experiences Scale in Multiple Personality Disorder

Abstract
Objective: This study was undertaken to investigate if the Dissociative Experiences Scale(DES) is a useful tool for treatment follow-up study of multiple personality disorder (MPD), if the therapy for the MPD could reduce dissociative symptoms,
and
if a
treatment program for MPD was effective at reducing dissociative symptomatology. Method: The DES was administered to the individuals with MPD at the both moments of admission and discharge. The patients who were admitted for less than 4 weeks and
scored
less than 30 on DES at the time of admission were excluded. Results: Average score of DES at the time of discharge was decreased significantly in comparison to that of admission. The amnesia factor was significantly increased. Conclusion: These
findings
suggest that the dissociative disorders program at the Pennsylvania Hospital may be effective and the DES could be a useful tool to follow treatment result. However, the authors suggest to develop more precise tool with appropriate questions to
measure
the "state" of dissociative experiences for the broader application to everyone with MPD.
